 ARCHEO
 Traces of people and civilization

Today's image of the Republic of San Marino is associated with the tree towers which dominate the underlaying valleys since medieval age.
But recent excavations (1997-2004) conducted by the Archaeological Section of the State Museums both on top of Mount Titano (Second and Third Tower area) and at the bottom (Poggio Castellano and Ca’Rigo areas) brought to light evidence of protohistorical communities which settled there from the 12th to the 4th century b.C.
Finds of the late Bronze Age are of special historical interest as they testify to the important role played since the 12th century b.C. by the Marecchia Valley - a preferred route in connecting the eastern Po Valley, the Tevere Valley and the mining sites of Tyrrhenian Etruria, in respect of which Mount Titano, original settlement and emblem of the Republic of San Marino, had a monitoring function.
